NJECPAC Protecting NJ Electrical Contractors

We have seen unions being beaten back across the country which in the public sector and for taxpayers may be a good thing however, the consequence could be a focus and strengthening of Construction Labor Unions. 

Unions know that Merit shop construction trades are vulnerable and unorganized. NJECPAC primary focus is Electrical Contractors, we predict increased union activity and a rough road ahead for Merit Shop Electrical Contractors that will be forced to defend themselves against union organizing attempts. 

In NJ there are many separate Electrical Contractor Associations however, the large majority of Merit Shop Electrical Contractors do not belong to an Association, which leaves them out in the cold with no protection when they are targeted by a union. 

Another issue that is easily corrected is Organizations that do exist primarily focus on mandated Continuing Education and not much more. The leading organizations know the importance being active in Government and Regulatory Affairs and are members of NJECPAC.    

NJECPAC is the common thread protecting Merit Shop Electrical Contractors in NJ against egregious Legislation and Regulations coming from Trenton. Local Electrical Contractors Association squandered an opportunity to protect their members when they rejected a merger with an Association that works diligently to protect their interests in NJ and also in Washington DC. Power and influence comes with numbers.

Every NJ Electrical Contractor has an obligation to their industry and the survival of their own business to be members of the strongest Association(s) in the State.  A good place to start is with a NJECPAC member Association. 

NJECPAC Member Associations are the leaders in New Jersey providing Education in Government & Regulatory Affairs, Credibility & Strength to NJ's Electrical Contractors. Strong Associations provide their members with the ability to protect themselves from unscrupulous union organizing activity, damaging Legislation, and Regulations, all of which can put them out of business before they know what happened.

Unions Dealt Another Blow

on steps to U.S. Supreme Court

Labor Unions were dealt another blow yesterday by the Supreme Court in a ruling that stated that unions must inform their members of the intended use of dues assessments in particular when they are used for political activities providing an employee the opportunity to opt out. 

We have seen the failure of the unions’ in the Wisconsin recall attempt, Failure when a Federal Judge shot down the NLRB's mandatory posting requirement, and another Federal Judge shot down the NLRB's Micro Election rule which if implemented would allow unions to organize portions of a company, for example, in the construction industry Apprentices could be organized without organizing the rest of a company. 

Labor groups in Michigan are attempting to get a state amendment placed on the November ballot designed to guarantee the right to collective-bargaining for government and private-sector workers. If this is defeated in Michigan, one of the most unionized states in the country, 49 other other states could move to bring unions under control there, too.

Other states likely to make the next move in curtailing the power of Big Labor are Missouri, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Mexico, Iowa and Pennsylvania.

The labor movement itself is stumbling forward, trying to find scapegoats while licking their wounds and clambering to stop their losses. Some steps that unions are taking are changing their leadership, mergers, and signing up the unemployed. 

Meanwhile, Big Labor will continue to point to “union-busters” as the cause of all their problems, rather than their lack of relevance in meeting the needs of today’s employees or the fact that they are killing the companies they organize.

New Jersey Independent Electrical Contractors was named the 2011 Legislative Chapter of the Year at the 2011 IEC National Convention and Expo in Louisville Kentucky.

IEC National Association has over 60 chapters Nationwide. The Award is New Jersey IEC's third consecutive Legislative Chapter of the Year Award having also won the Award in 2009 & 2010 

New Jersey Independent Electrical Contractors Chapter President Arthur Carver, IEC Northeast Regional Director Joseph Hovanec Jr. and NJ-IEC Executive Director Eric DeGesero Accepted the Award from 2011 IEC National President Mike Kallmeyer. 

NJ-IEC was recognized for its efforts to create a fair, equal, and safe workplace for all electrical contractors. NJ-IEC continues to maintain their long time Alliance with their Continuing Political Committee (NJECPAC) and other Electrical Contractor organizations throughout NJ for the common cause of working with the Legislature and Governor’s office to support and pass a package of tax relief bills.

The Independent Electrical Contractors National Association (IEC) also has a strong Nationally Recognized Government Affairs Committee representing Independent Electrical Contractors on Legislative and Regulatory issues in Washington DC. IEC National provides www.iecvotes.com enabling Electrical Contractors across the country to contact their Legislators in Washington on important issues affecting their business.
